[chirp_users] Trying to get VOX working on an RT20
Hello.
One of the reasons I bought a bunch of RT20s was that they supposedly come with VOX. Why on earth don't they preload it if the thing is advertised to come with it?
I am trying to talk to the radio via a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), running 10.15.7 (Catalina).
I have installed CHIRP legacy. I went to Download from Radio, but the RT20 isn't listed.
I am sorry if this is a repeat question, but I couldn't find a searchable version of the archives.
Thank you!
K
Update: I am now using CHIRP-next.
But I am completely baffled. The radio is not talking to CHIRP, but I am baffled regarding the cable.
Can someone tell me what cable I need to connect from the RT20 to a USB 2.0 port?
Thank you!

Any programming cable with a Kenwood style 2-pin plug on the radio end and a module containing a USB-to-Serial chip on the computer end should work. It is best to have one using an FTDI style chip because you can take advantage of the Apple native FTDI driver. Other chip brands may require the purchase of 3rd party drivers. Here are a few examples of FTDI chip based programming cables that should work.

Actually, the RT20 has a USB-C plug. The cable is available from Retevis. I'm not sure what's in it, but I tried a straight USB cable and it didn't work. Attarently there's a serial chip (two?) In the cable. I'see if I can do some playing around and figure out what's in it

I plugged the Retevis cable USB-A end into my linux laptop, and 'lsusb' says 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port / Mobile Action MA-8910P so it's definitely not a usb A to C cable. Plugging the USB-C end in doesn't register anything, so my bet right now is that the socket on the radio isn't really USB-C; likely just a usb-c power pins and 5v serial on the data pins.

Right. It is just a serial connection in the form of a USB-C connector.
