[chirp_users] BF 888S - side key function - Transmit Power
I am using daily build 2017126 to programme a standard baofeng BF888S. I can change the individual channel power settings through the Power column in the tabular Memories screen which is great. I have verified this actually works with a power meter. However I can't re-designate the Side Key Function as Transmit Power via the Settings screen. It does re-designate that key to the other functions when selected. Is that a software bug or operator error on my part ?
On my 888 the low and high are indistinguishable from one another... Your mileage may vary

I just changed the setting of the side key using CHIRP and then read the radio using the factory software to confirm that the side key value was properly set. It was.
Also after setting the side key function to Transmit Power, it is evident that the factory default Monitor setting is no longer available. Pressing the the side key now either causes the radio to emit 1 beep or 2 beeps. I assume the beeps tell the user what the power level was just switched to.
I've checked this on 2 BF-888S radios.

Since I never see myself using 128 or however many memories these radio have, if I want different power or tone settings,
I just put the same frequency in multiple memories, with different settings.
ch 6 - 146.52 high power ch 7 - 146.52 low power ch 8 - 146.52 high power - tone on.
Keep the same sequence for each frequency.
Lot easier to change channels than remembering menu buttons.
Same with scanning. If there is a channel that’s important, put it in the list every six or eight slots.
The priority function on my UV2501 makes a “click” in the speaker, every time it is checking the channel.
The BF-888S radios only have something like 16 channels, so that technique may not be as useful.

Unless you are worrying about how long your battery lasts, just keep it on high power. When the FCC says don't use anymore power than is necessary, I don't think they care about 1 watt vs 5 watts as much as they care about 100 watts vs 1500. You are not going to get a ticket that says you used 5 watts when 0.83 watts would have worked.
