[chirp_users] Ubuntu PPA version not up to date?
I have installed CHIRP on my Ubuntu 14.04LTS laptop using the PPA method as described here - http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download
I kept getting "radio refused to send block xxx" errors, although it worked fine using the Windows under VirtualBox. After reading the bug reports, I tried using the "manual install" found here - http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux
That worked perfectly. Looking at the About page, I see that the PPA version installed is 0.4.1 while the source version is daily-20160116. I'm just curious as to why the PPA version is not (or does not appear to be) up to date? Thanks.
Sounds like you have chirp installed, you need to remove chirp, then install chirp-daily. Your distribution has an old version of chirp and will give you errors if you try to install chirp-daily before removing chirp.

Actually, I just copied the chirp-daily version to it's own directory and I am running it from there. It seems to coexist ok with the distribution version. I was just wondering why the PPA version was out-dated...
The PPA version is NOT outdated. That is how I do mine, and I have "CHIRP daily-20160116" and it updates every time a new version comes out, unless I hold it up.
And yes putting it in its own folder will work nicely as long as you start chirp in that folder.

That's odd then... I even did an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade and the version installed by the PPA was still the 0.4.1 version. Oh well... It (the source version) works so... Thanks anyway.
Read carefully! Using your package manager or apt-get, remove "chirp", then using same, install "chirp-daily". They are not the same, but they will conflict with each other, and prevent install of "chirp-daily", which is what you want.
If that does not work, then you have some kind of path problem to a local copy. The process works if you do it right.

OHHHH... Ok. Listen... I'm not dense. I just mis-read. I got it now. Thank you very much, though.
In my defense.. I would like to point out that there are two PPAs listed on the site:
http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-hams-updates/ppa
-and-
http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots
I found the hams-update PPA first so that is the one I had used first. There is no chirp-daily on that PPA. I removed that one and added the snapshots PPA and I was able to install chirp-daily from that and it works fine now.
I wanted to thank you again for your help.
Glad you got it! And glad the confusion finally cleared for you.
Perhaps someone who can should edit the wiki to make it clear.
