I'm having trouble programming my FT 857D with Chirp. When I click "Send" on the radio, it says "Error" after a couple of seconds. Any help appreciated!

Can you read from the radio? You need to do that before you write to the radio. What operating system are you using? If Windows, check your cable on Device Manager. If it shows your cable is a Prolific, roll your driver back to 3.2.0.0. This can be found at www.miklor.com.

No, can't read from the radio. Win 10. I open chirp; click on radio/ download from radio; check port, vendor and model; click OK; Instructions pop up, and I follow them; after I click "Send" after about 4 seconds the radio says "Error".

If the cable serial com port is setup right then do this.
The very first thing you need to do is make your 857D.img file with chirp. You can't "send" anything till you do this.
Start Chirp and you should have nothing loaded, a blank screen. Should look like this: Then plug in your radio. With my Baofeng I plug it in turned off then turn on. Click on Radio / Download from radio. If you get that far let me know.
