Re: [chirp_users] Need info on Motorola XTN XU2600 radio

Kevin,
Assuming that 67.0 Hz is the CTCSS tone used by the Motorola radios, you have 2 choices for programming the BF-888S radios. But before we get started, you should click "View" in the CHIRP menu bar and then in the drop down menu, enable "Hide Unused Fields".
Method 1:
This method will transmit the 67.0 Hz CTCSS tone that is required to open the squelch on the Motorola radios. It leaves the BF-888S squelch as carrier operated. It won't matter if the transmitting station is using CTCSS or not.
Tone Mode = Tone Tone = 67.0 ToneSql = unused (88.5 or blank if "Hide Unused Fields" is enabled)
Jim, thank you so much. Your Method 1 worked like a champ, so I never even tried Method 2.
Be sure to let you son's principal (or better yet, the person that is responsible for the license that gives them the authority to transmit on the frequencies that you are programming) know that these radios aren't certified for part 90 use under the FCC rules. Their use for this purpose would not be permitted.
Thanks, also, for this warning. It never even occurred to me that reprogramming these radios might be illegal. I'll pass this one. Do you know of any pointers to documents on the Web that might be useful to read concerning this issue?
Thanks, again, for your excellent help and advice. Have a good day.

Hello, I just joined this group, after downloading and using CHIRP. Thank you all for a very helpful application. The principal at my son's school asked for my help. They have a number of Motorola XTN XU2600 radios, that they'd like to gradually replace with Baofeng BF-888S ones. I'm trying to use CHIRP to program the Baofeng radios so that they interoperate with the Motorola ones, using the same channel numbers. I was able to run CHIRP and successfully downloaded the settings from the Baofeng. However, I don't have a programming cable for the Motorola, and the Baofeng one doesn't fit. I changed the frequencies in the Baofeng to match the UHF frequencies I found in the Motorola user's manual, but the radios don't communicate. I left all the other columns unchanged. Subsequently, I changed the 'TONE Mode' to 'None' for all the channels. I then noticed that the Baofeng could receive on channel 1 when I transmitted on the Motorola on channel one, but the Motorola couldn't receive from the Baofeng. I believe that I need all the information for all the columns to get the Baofeng working with the Motorola. Can anyone point me to a CHIRP .img file or a .cvs file for the Motorola XTN XU2600? I'd be happy to send my factory-default Baofeng BF-888S .img file to anyone, or to a repository, for future reference. Is the Motorola set up to use any of the stock configs? This is what I have programmed in the Baofeng for channel 1: Freq: 464.500000 Tone mode: none Tone: 88.5 ToneSql: 69.3 DTCS Code: 023 DTCS Rx Code: 023 DTCS Pol: NN Cross Mode: Tone->Tone Duplex: none Offset: 0.0 Mode: FM Power: High Skip: S Thank you for any advice or guidance you can give me. Thank, again, for such a useful program. -Kevin _______________________________________________ chirp_users mailing list chirp_users@intrepid.danplanet.com <mailto:chirp_users@intrepid.danplanet.com> http://intrepid.danplanet.com/mailman/listinfo/chirp_users
You may want to read Part 2 and Part 90 of the FCC Rules and Regulations. They can be found on the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations web site at: http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title47/47cfr2_mai... http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title47/47cfr90_main_02...
Part 2 is the general rules for all services and Part 90 is the Private Land Mobile Radio Services rules.
90.427 says "...no person shall program into a transmitter frequencies for which the licensee using the transmitter is not authorized."

Tom, thanks for this citation. I'll pass it along to the school.
IANAL, but it seems to me that the section you quote of 90.427 wouldn't apply. The school is (hopefully) licensed to use the frequency; they're already using it with the Motorola radios. Jim's point was that the Baofeng radios aren't certified by the FCC to use that frequency, if I understand correctly.
Regardless, I'm grateful to all the folks who created and maintain CHIRP; it allowed me to do a task that I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.
