My experience was that you had to use the UV5R, for some reason the UV8 selection wouldn't communicate with the radio.

Baofeng radios with 3 power levels typically use the BF-F8HP for the model selection. Give that a try. Download first. If you are successful, save the original download to a file as a backup (store it in a safe place and don't change it). Then save again as a working copy to make your changes to.
