[chirp_users] CHIRP ON LINUX,UNABLE TO FIND COM PORT FOR BAOFENG
Hello everyone, I have a Baofeng BF-UVB3 8W radio. My computer is linux, running Ubuntu 18.10, the newest. I have CHIRP installed and running, but I am not able to find the COM port for my radio, connected via a USB programming cable.
I have entered every terminal command line I could find info about on the internet, even one that showed me port numbers for connected devices, yet there is no port number or path that works for my radio.
What COM port should I use?
Thank You KBD99603

Your problem is most likely a counterfeit Prolific chip in the cable. Go to www.miklor.com and they tell you how to install a legacy driver for the chip which will recognize the radio with your computer attached. You can also go into your operating system and tell it not to automatically update that particular driver when new versions of the operating system are installed. Chris Knowles, N1CAK

That sounds helpful and likely true, being that the cable and radio came from the Wish app.
Thanks

The issue you speak of is only for Windows and MacOS X users. The Linux device driver for the Prolific type USB-to-TTL chip is not written by the Prolific company so it does not care if the chip is genuine or counterfeit. It just works.

I'll chime in here that counterfeit Prolific USB to serial devices *usually* just work in Linux. I have seen a few times where one of two of the cables I have just seem to stop working but if I completely unplug both sides of the cable, wait 10 seconds, and re-connect boths sides, this usually resolves the issue.

Hello. First: make sure your cable is working. Open terminal and type: ls /dev/ttyUSB*
This is list of your USB-COM devices.
To enable COM-port on CHIRP: Please add your user to DIALOUT group, then logout and login or reboot your pc. or start chirp with root privileges (not recommended).

Hmmm...don't put in the leading slash (/) when typing lsusb
Unless, of course, you have a copy of lsusb sitting in the root directory. [grin]

On every Linux distro that I have used it has been "/dev/ttyUSB0", On a new install of CHIRP I've always had to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list of ports to find it.

Alright, after hours and hours of trying basically the same thing, I was finally able to connect my radio to chirp. Thanks for all the help, it was your suggestions that helped me search the internet further. I had success by following directions on an Ask Ubuntu Thread. The link is below if you want to check it out:
