[chirp_users] Odd splits....
I asked a while back, but got no response. Since there has been a bit of a conversation about transmitting, I thought I would ask again….
Using CHIRP (latest stable or daily) I find that I can specify odd splits (not just +/- .6), but the software doesn’t seem to save them correctly. Anyone notice this besides me? If I set it up in CHIRP, it will hold long enough to program the radio, but it reverts to some odd mixture of either + or - in that column if I try to save and reload the spreadsheet. I have to reset the correct transmit freq every time I use it.
I’m famous for oddball issues, so if this affects no one else, I’ll just live with it, but I would call it a bug worth noting to the software developer(s). BTW, I’m using the Mac version, but I don’t think it matters. Seems like I had the same issue when I tried a Win version.
TIA, Forrest
You should be able to enter: RX Freq in the Frequency Column "Split" in the Duplex Column TX Freq in the Offset Column
Make sure the frequencies programmed are within the specified operation range of the radio. There are examples and guides showing this on the Miklor website http://www.miklor.com by following the link to the CHIRP section.
Hope this helps. John K3NXU http://www.miklor.com

Thanks, John. I’ve done all that, and successfully programmed the radio using it, BUT, the changes are not maintained when I save and then reload the image file OR when I download directly from the radio. Every single time I want to do anything to the file I have to manually re-do the channels that have non-standard splits. Can’t for the life of me see anything I’m doing wrong, especially since it will program the radio once correctly. Thankfully I only have 3-4 channels that need that type of programming, but still, there seems to be something wrong.
Regards, Forrest

Upon further review, maybe this is the answer, in that CHIRP, for whatever reason, knowingly does not display the correct freq after it ‘computes’ it?
From the tutorial,
Channel 74 is the same as channel 73 except the transmit frequency is used instead of an offset. To accomplish this, Duplex must be set to "split" and Offset will contain the TX frequency. Once the file is saved, CHIRP computes the values and updates it to look identical to channel 73.

Forrest,
What you are describing is normal behavior when the RX and TX frequencies are in the same band and within the OFFSET range of the radio. CHIRP will examine the 2 frequencies, calculate the difference and update the entry using the Duplex (- or +) and OFFSET equivalent. Try these examples.
1. Enter a standard VHF repeater using split Frequency = 146.840 Duplex = split Offset = 146.240
Now press the [Go] button (or save to an .img file or upload to the radio). The cells will be changed to Duplex = - Offset = 0.600000
2. Enter a standard UHF repeater using split Frequency = 444.900 Duplex = split Offset = 449.900
Now press the [Go] button (or save to an .img file or upload to the radio). The cells will be changed to Duplex = + Offset = 5.000000
3. Enter a made up split Frequency = 137.000 Duplex = split Offset = 177.000
Now press the [Go] button (or save to an .img file or upload to the radio). The cells will be changed to Duplex = + Offset = 40.000000
All three examples are change to their correct and equivalent -/+ Duplex and OFFSET values.

If you do the math manually or will save the freqs

Sorry, cell phone hit send before I was ready.
I've found that you can put a weird spilt like .524 and it works and stays in the img file as well as on the radio.
