[chirp_users] Problems Connecting Baofeng UV-5R to Software
I'm running Chirp on OS 10.8.4, trying to program a bunch of radios (Baofeng UV-5R) for our Civil Defense volunteer CERT communicator groups.
I am aware that there are some issues with certain cables. So far, I purchased two cables (from different vendors), most recently Wouxum-US.
In all cases, I am unable to connect to any of the radios using CHIRP (Mac) or the Windows (XP) with the Baofeng code.
I've used the drivers with both that came from the Wouxum site.
In both Mac and Windows, the software comes up and presents itself. When I attempt to read the radio, after a pause, I get a failed to connect message.
Can you give me direction as to how best to fix this?
The usual advice is to take a look at http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php.
My personal advice is to go get a serial Kenwood-compatible programming cable and a USB->Serial converter with an FTDI chipset.

Jim, Check your error messages against those in http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-ErrorMess.php Let us know specifically which error message you have and we can go from there. If it's a driver problem, refer to the MAC driver section of this group.
It has been found that some jacks on the case have been misaligned and the side of the cables need to be trimmed to get past the edge. Let us know if any of the helps.

Hi
THere have some issues with the physical connection on some cables. They have to be pushed in real hard. You could try this.

I am also running OS 10.8.4 and use the Baofeng cable. I get the same error but if you persist it works fine. It normally take me about 3-4 tries to get it to upload and download from the radio, but when it does it work just fine. I've removed the cable from the pc and plugged it back in, turned the radio off and back on, restarted chirp etc, just cant remember which one kicked it into gear. Just might save you buying a heap of cables that will give you the same result.

Below is the USB to serial software I am using with CHIRP running on OSX 10.7, programmed my Baofeng and my Wouxon using the Baofeng cable, worked like a charm. Straight from the CHIRP documentation of OSX tips:
Some UV5R owners have reported that this driver works for Lion (10.7.x) and Mountain Lion (10.8.x):

If it takes multiple tries, but eventually loads fine,
you may want to remove the antenna from the radio
or dial it to a known quiet channel.
An open squelch can sometimes impact the transfer process.

Not sure if this will help or not, but in my testing, the UV-E5 radios, which I understand are the same as the UV-5R (please correct me if I am wrong) won't work with the Wouxun cable. I have found that a TYT radio cable does work.

My first radio is a Wouxun radio. I also have a Baofeng, and use just the 1 cord for both. Most com problems are driver issues. See this site for further info:

CJ,
The UV-E5 is basically a UV-5R. The E5 I am familiar with doesn't have a BAND button. Even though the UV-5R still has one, the BAND button became an unnecessary feature with the release of the BFB291 firmware.
The programming cable that came with my Wouxun KG-UV6D works fine with my Baofeng UV-5R, UV-B5 and Kenwood TH-F6.
