The current version of this radio's firmware is 1.03 as from the factory. The radio has alot of advantages but what I am looking for is a way to
A) download the firmware image from the radio B) Locate a site where there might be an updated firmware revision
Has anybody got leads on these items?

A) Can't be done. B) Doesn't exist.

I appreciate the text economy which probably saved a great deal of internet bandwidth. However with regard to A), I have seen firmware extracted with JTAG methods direct from the chip or the board and we all know these devices have flashable upgradeable firmware. I was investigating the possibility of not going to that level of dive. From a flash software perspective, are you saying it always goes one way with firmware upgrade and not another?
With regard to B), how are you certain of that exactly?

We all do not know these devices have flashable/upgradeable firmware, in fact quite the opposite, if we are talking about Baofeng-like radios.
Opening the case and tapping onto the PCB/chip leads to 'get at' the firmware may work to read the firmware, but as I understand the radios do not have rewriteable/erasable/updateable firmware ICs.
Baofeng DMR radios are a different beast with upgradeable firmware.
Ken, N2VIP
The BF-F8HP Pro and newer analog models have upgradeable firmware which will be supported by official version of Terri Kennedy's CPS in upcoming release, so this information is outdated. It would be nice if Chirps followed suit but I think everybody needs to catch up first.

Ditto. Baofeng radios are flashed once and done. That’s how they are built. That’s why different versions of the same model of HT have widely different capabilities. The key to success and happiness with Baofengs is to figure out the firmware version that is working best. Such as the 1.03 on the UV-18 Pro Max. Then buy a radio that is flashed with that version of firmware. One of the issues with that model is getting the 220 mode to work. With that version of firmware, it does. When you buy a Baofeng it is imperative that you get the right firmware on the radio when you buy it. It can’t be reflashed by anyone. Maybe the factory can. So the morals of the story are two. First know and specify the firmware version when you buy the radio. Second, if it’s the wrong one return it under the warranty period immediately. For example I am getting into the 220 band. Some versions of the firmware, it just doesn’t work on. With firmware version 1.03 it works. That is a simple fact. So I made sure that I bought the right radio with the right firmware on it. Guys, this is entirely off-topic for this list as it has nothing to do with CHIRP. I kindly ask you to take it to a more appropriate forum.
Thanks!

This is no longer the case. The Baofeng DMR radio models have always been firmware upgradeable. Traditionally, the analog only models have not been upgradeable, but this has been slowly changing. I have at least 2 models that are firmware upgradeable. The newly released BF-F8HP PRO from Baofeng Tech (the radio dealer in the USA) being the most recent one that I have that has and will receive firmware updates.
Jim KC9HI
Hey Jim, what you are saying here was confirmed by Terri Kennedy of CPS fame by an email to me from yesterday before I sent any email here. The firmware upgradeability is to be supported by CPS, which therefore brings the topic over to Chirps since it' already is being done over there.
Thanks for the response
