[chirp_users] Only 99 channels with Kenwood TM-281A
Only 99 channels with Kenwood TM-281A
Hi All:
Been trying to use CHIRP to program my Kenwood TM-281A. This radio is specced for 200 channels but, according to literature, reverts to 100 channels when names are used.
When I download from the radio it only allows me 100 channels (0-99), even when I import a CSV file with the names deleted. When I click on the memory range I am unable to go past 99 (upward arrow greyed out).
Is there a way to open up the memory to 200 channels?
Thanks!
Is there a switch in the SETTINGS tab?

Hi Nigel:
Thanks for the reply. I don't see a settings tab. When I "download from radio" and try and click on the "Properties" tab there is no response. I hope that would be an area where I could increase the number of channels to the specified 200 that is supposed to be available. It's like the radio is stuck on alphanumeric mode.

I should also add that I already went into the actual radio menu # 15 and changed the radio to 200 channel mode.

You're right. I just tried it. On my TM-271, it appears to be menu 17 on the radio settings. You might have to power cycle or reset the radio from menu 99.

Thanks Nigel, I did the full reset from menu 99 as well as cycled the power, unplugged and replugged cables, restarted CHIRP, etc. Nothing fixed it so far. I'm baffled!!!

If you're willing to install, you can get the free (non-commercial use) VM from VmWare, and a Win-10 Pro disk off eBay for ~ $25.
And if you later realize you made the initial Win partition to small, like me, EaseUS has a free partition management tool that was fairly intuitive.
I went this route so I could run the OEM, Win-only SW for my DMR HT and updating my Garmin GPS.

I've got a copy of Win10 that came with this laptop but not sure which is the easiest sandbox to use. I was dual booting but Windows updates seem to destroy GRUB too easily.

If you don't mind downloading a lot of unnecessary compiling tools, Microsoft has pre built image for virtual box, VMware and more at https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/virtual-machines/
The VM is license free but only good for 30/60 days, I can't remember which.
I haven't dual booted windows in about 2 years for the exact reason Nigel mentioned -- it will remove grub and install its own bootloader (which doesn't normally see Linux last I checked)

Tony.
VmWare's is good indefinitely, I've already received several updates, going on a year or so.
And, especially, thanks for the heads-up regarding Win overwriting grub. I picked up a Win laptop at Christmas and figured I'd set it up for dual-boot at some point. Now not so sure.

It's menu 15, not 17 but, same here. I've now got 100 empty channels. We seem to be doing exactly as the manual says. I guess it's broken.
