[chirp_users] Google Chrome?
Impossible without serious knowledge of Linux I believe. It can be done if you reload chrome os with generic Linux though.

You don't need a Bill Gates machine.
You need virtually any second hand standard PC without operating system and load FREE Linux.

Doesn't Chrome OS have pretty sophisticated Linux containerization these days via Crostini?
Is the issue that USB device support hasn't landed yet? I know they're closing a number of potential security holes around, say, clipboard access. That certainly applies to USB devices too, and I'm not sure if that work is done, in process or stalled.

You could purchase a raspberry pi 4 :) The new 2GB ram option just dropped in price recently and was $35 last I saw.

Do any laptop in the last 15 years and reload it with Debian Linux. You can even sideload it on the chrome book in some cases. Chrome os is good for email, light documents and email.

I am tempted to second this. I know chrome has an "expert" feature that can be enabled where you can then run normal Linux programs (like gimp etc) but the file system was severely limited last time I used it about a year ago so I wouldn't expect any /dev/ttyUSB* devices to be available inside the sandbox.
It will definitely take some poking around by someone with a Chromebook laying around (which I do not anymore)

You can hack the Chromebook to run Linux, either by setting it up to dual boot (run Chrome OS or Linux) or by completely overwriting the factory OS and going full Linux. Here's one of the tutorials that I used when I was using a Chromebook last year: https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-install-linux-on-your-chromebook.
If at all possible, I recommend finding an inexpensive, used laptop and using Windows or some variant of Linux because it is a bit easier, but it can be done with a Chromebook.

Yes, but that begs the question... chromebooks are like super expensive for what they can do. I'd rather <WARNING: OPINION NOT TROLLING> buy a juiced up 13" lappie, wipe OEM windows and install Linux, then install VirtualBox for whatever else I need.
been looking at this beauty with Neon preinstalled : https://kde.slimbook.es/
But, for reality, it's the similar to my Dell E5470 running Linux. 16G/250SSD/i5, except it looks cooler, and is cheaper for same. LOL :)

I agree. That's why I recommended finding an inexpensive, used laptop and going from there. I lucked into a Lenovo for not too much money and that's what I've been using. It's setup as a dual boot with Windows and ZorinOS.

You need Linux to run CHIRP on a Chromebook. IMNSHO, however, the best Linux solution for a Chromebook is NOT Google's Crostini (the "official" way), which has been and still is a "work in progress." (Others may disagree, and that is fine, and it is totally your choice). The best solution by me is Crouton, developed by a Google engineer, Dan Schneider. Crostini only allows you to run Linux apps, it does not provide a full LInux desktop, and requires you to do most everything from the command line. Crouton provides a full Linux desktop (I prefer xfce) so you have a nice graphical interface much more like what you are used to. Also, there are a number of Chromebooks, including my high-end-for-2017 Asus Flip c302 for which for whatever reason Google did not even make Crostini available (oddly, it works on a lot of older and less powerful Chromebooks).
Here https://www.howtogeek.com/162120/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-on-your-chromebook-with-crouton/ is a very complete article on installing Ubuntu with Crouton.
Here https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton is an article that is also required reading, since some of the steps have changed due to changes in ChromeOS. I also explains how to use different versions of Ubuntu, and do a lot of other cool stuff. Be sure to install the Crouton extension in Chrome, it is necessary to share the Clipboard between Chrome and LInux. This is all explained in this article.
Now, don't be afraid of putting your Chromebook in Developer Mode. It is "not secure" but it is still more secure than a Windows or Mac computer. The main vulnerability is that somebody with PHYSICAL ACCESS to your Chromebook could do bad things. It does not expose your Chromebook to bad things from the Internet.
So after you have Ubuntu installed, you need to install CHIRP. Installing and running CHIRP requires three commands on the command line. It is explained here https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux. One cool thing about CHIRP under Linux is that updates are made with a single command at the command line. The command line can be intimidating, but for the most part you can copy and paste from the web pages into the Linux command line terminal.
I probably left something out, but give it a try!

I would just go out and get a good older laptop. I use Thinkpads they are built like battleships and you can get them all over the place, Put one of the more common linux distros on it (I use Ubuntu Mate but just about any of the Debian descendants will work) install Chirp and now you have a Chirpbook.
Also there are many other distros that will work, I am just most familiar with the Debian family.
Check Ebay for Thnkpads give it your top price and see what pops up.
Or the other option as someone pointed out is a Raspberry Pi. Works quite well to. In my view any of those solutions are better than dealing with Windows and all of the evil issues it brings with it (I see where Confiker, is back that is what REALLY finished souring me on Windows, I had a glass plant full of machines that Confiker had invaded, will not go into it except that it was a mess), Windows folks any of your comments will be sent to /dev/null. I got the tee shirt with the bullet holes. I have a very good understanding of Microsoft hell.

I am happy to report that I was able to read and write to my baofeng 777s using CloudReady v78 (closest ChromeOS distro freely available) using crouton. I'm also sad to report I have ChromiumOS on a not-chromebook, but it was for a good cause!
I installed Debian 10 (Buster) with xfce and it was a pretty straightforward process aside from having 'dillon' as a web browser, having no permissions on the Downloads folder and not being in the 'serial' group.
Thanks Pat for the reminder about Crouton, it has so much more capability than crostini does. I'd be happy to help write something up if it would help anyone.

Well the Git CPS will work with my 878 but not my CS800D. I use EdiitCP for the TYT radios, Dale says he is going to look at the 878 when he gets a chance. He has a life and family so that is understood. EditCP works VERY good, shows errors the radio CP does not catch, forces you to fix them.

Correct, ChromeOs does not support CHIRP, BUT ChromeOS DOES support Linux, which DOES support CHIRP. In fact Linux is the preferred platform for CHIRP. If you are not running Linux on your ChromeOS machine, you are missing the BEST part of what ChromeOS can do!

I've found a problem with the crouton script. It repartitions your hard drive, which is probably only 16GB to start with and, having removed crouton and reverted to vanilla Chrome OS, I have lost 5GB, I assume, in a hidden partition that I can't get back. So now, if I reinstall Linux, it only starts with 11GB. Can't afford to loose that amount.
