[chirp_users] Kenwood TM-D710GA Issues
A recently purchased D710GA is working with the MCP6 software and the USB version of the programming cable on COM 4. When I use the MCP6 to program a few channels, it is not showing up when I use the same configuration with Chirp and tell it to download from the radio. I try to import a CSV with channels from another radio and it never uploads to the D710GA. The baud rate is set for 9600 in everything. How long should it take to upload 128 channels in live mode? I have been waiting for 1/2 hour and nothing uploads. I have tried this several times.
Ideas? Thanks.
In live mode, you don't upload 128 channels. It uploads to the radio as you edit the fields, in real time.

I recall having problems with this, too (F6A, V71A). I found that MCP was not "live" and would capture snapshots of all the memories, but CHIRP won't. I don't understand why CHIRP insists that updating must be live, when MCP doesn't. Awkward.
And I found the same hang on trying to update more than 1 channel at a time.
I went to using MCP to initially configure my radio, then swapped to CHIRP for the download and went from there, but updating 1 channel at a time. Have not revisited this recently, so maybe CHIRP handles this better now.

You are right, the MCP6 does an upload of the entire file and not in "live" mode. I use Chirp for other radios since it first came out with no problems at all. I am looking forward to someday using it with my DMR radios.

MCP and live mode are two completely different protocols supported by the F6, V71, and D710. The reasoning for Chirp using live mode has been discussed here many times. Chiefly, in live mode, the radio has the ability to reject a channel as invalid. This is really valuable when you're relying on guessing the protocol specification, like Chirp does. MCP toggles bits on the radio without any validation, so you better know what you're doing when toggling something. The writers of the MCP software had the advantage of being able to reference Kenwood's internal protocol documentation.

I have often wondered why the radio manufactures are so tight fisted with the protocols, I guess it all comes down to money. You would think that they would be happy to share with Chirp, I guess not.
Keep up the good work guys.

It is somewhat slow, but nowhere near half-hour slow. While live update is transferring data, you will see the status bar in the lower left corner update with what it's doing.
I'd probably start by just copying one channel from the CSV and pasting it into the D710GA live update tab. Watch for what it says in the status bar, so you know what it looks like. Then check the radio for that one channel. If it's not working, troubleshoot further. If it worked, continue on with the batch of 128.
