[chirp_users] [CHIRP] #75: Import poblem between 880H and VX-7R

I have been running edits and transfers with little issue. I am puzzled why, when editing my 880 image and importing from the VX7 image, some of the 880 memory lines are grayed out. They should be valid and importable. Going the other direction (from 880 file to VX7) Everything looks good, and the D-STAR stuff is the only thing that is (properly)gray. I am attaching my 880 and VX-7 images. Thanks Dan!

Hi Brian,
It looks to me like the ones that are greyed out when importing into the VX7 are DV memories in the 880. CHIRP's import process greys these out because they are no supported by the destination radio (i.e. since the VX7 cannot do DV mode).
Am I missing something? Is there some reason why allowing such an import might be useful to users?
Thanks!

Yep, you're missing something. :D
It is editing the 880 file and trying to import from the VX-7 that is the problem.

Ah, okay, I see now. The problem is that the 880 doesn't support WFM. However, I expect that the lines that are greyed out are not actually in WFM mode on your radio, is that right?
So, it's probably incorrectly detecting the VX7 mode and thus thinking it's not able to do the import.
I'll take a look, thanks!

Comment (by KN0N@…):
OK, after poking around the manuals it appears this might be a nomenclature issue between iCOM/Yaesu. Yaesu uses the term WFM and iCOM just calls it FM, but they both refer to the typical wide deviation FM mode that amateurs use. I could not find a similar convention in my Yaesu-8900 manual, but I suspect it might persist in the VX-6 and VX-8, at least.

Right, I think that what Yaesu calls WFM is the same as what the 91/92AD call WFM, which is for broadcast FM reception. What Yaesu calls NFM is what Icom calls FM, which is "narrow" when compared to broadcast. What Icom calls NFM is what Yaesu means when you have your radio in NFM receive mode and is on "half deviation".
If you look at page 21 of your VX7 manual, you'll see that it calls to enable WFM mode when you're looking to receive FM broadcast signals. It's also why you can only select WFM on the Main band, since the sub receiver is not capable of receiving those types of signals. That's also why there is a separate WFM squelch setting.
It does let you transmit in WFM mode (unlike the Icoms), but I expect it is just using what it calls NFM (5kHz deviation) for that.
So, I think I'm saying you have your radio programmed incorrectly for those channels and that chirp is doing the right thing in not letting you import them into the 880 since it does not support wide (i.e. FM broadcast) reception. Would you agree?

(sigh) That's the situation alright, thanks for the explanation. Broadcast FM never occurred to me. Looks like this was an unfounded ticket. I will clean up my Yaesu! :)

Okay, better unfounded than unworking...I won't charge you for it this time! :P
