George, You should give google.com a try. It's a great search engine. (No, I don't work for them!) You can just ask it things like "How do I program UV-5R?" and it will (almost) magically return you a list websites like: http://hamgear.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/setting-up-and-programming-your-uv-5... http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/

George,
For basic Manual Programming, refer to the website http://www.miklor.com/UV5R/
Programming section and Programming flowchart.
For programming with CHIRP, refer to the examples on this website as well as the CHIRP Software section, again at http://www.miklor.com/UV5R/
There you will find Guides and Examples.
Hope this helps.
Have a Safe and Happy holiday

Actually, it isn't hard. It is just different. Forget what you know and follow the guides that were previously posted.
I also recommend the WP4AOH blog. It explains more of what is going on.

I found programming both Wouxun UV6D v2 and UV 5R to have enough similarities. And the gentleman can take his Wouxun .img file and 'Import' it into his 'download from radio' template from the UV-5R saving some time getting used to the differences. That's a valuable resource when the radios share much of the same settings. Importing to say an Anytone AT5888UV from either HT is different since there are many fields the AT has that both the Chineses hand helds do not. But I also own both of those hand helds and if I had one nicely programmed I would certainly just import to the other.

you should try it blind sometime. the included programs for these radios is not accessible under windows. Neither is chirp (for either windows or OS X). I have to use it in Linux (which can be a real pain at times).

If it works for you in Linux then blame Windows, not Chirp.

I think the blame might be on the GUI framework PyGTK and accessibility in Windows rather than Chirp itself. But I could be totally wrong or partially wrong. I'm sure if I'm wrong I'll get a good spanking from someone.

Just did one myself. It's easy:
First, you need to install the correct drivers for your cable and OS (Beware, there are a lot of fake Prolific chips out there, these need special attention with the drivers - there is some documentation about this on the CHIRP site).
Once setup, plug the cable into the radio and the computer, then turn the radio on.
Start CHIRP, select from the Radio menu - Download from radio. This MUST be done first. Select the COM port for the interface cable. The download will start, and should be done within 30 seconds. If you save the file now, you have a working template you can edit any time without needing to download from the radio first (note this only works for that specific radio!).
Now, you can manually enter the programming information and radio settings. Alternatively, you can export the memory data to a CSV file, and edit it in Excel, or if you have frequency data from another source (for example, the WIA here in Australia provides CHIRP compatible CSV data for Australian repeaters).
If you've created/edited your memory data outside CHIRP, now is the time to import it back. Check that the data appears correctly in CHIRP, manually edit if necessary. Also double check the radio settings - there's a lot of useful options to tweak here. When you're satisfied, save the radio's configuration, so you can make future edits.
When all is ready, make sure the radio is connected properly to the computer and switched on. Select "Upload to Radio" from the Radio menu, then select the correct COM port. The upload should be done within 30 seconds.
Enjoy! :)
Just programmed a UV-5R for a friend, worked a treat, saved a LOT of manually poking buttons. Next project, to come up with a set of common memory data for all of my computer programmable radios, so I can maintain a master spreadsheet and import the data into all of my radios.
The common memory data import is already built into Chirp. Except for fields not common to several
different brands which will never happen, Chirp handles .img file import into the current .img template as well as any across the board database current can. I guess if the Chirp codebase could be expanded to do "import from Baofeng UV-5R into Wouxun UV-6D then it would rearrange the
fields that don't match each radio's image, would enhance Chirp immensely. Right now it's up to the user to figure out which channel line did not import. And that's pretty easy to figure out and then make the changes yourself per individual line. I've found this most problemental when you have public safety frequencies intermingled with ham radio standard simplex and repeater channels. Channel lines not imported will be of lighter text. I forget if you can just hover your cursor over the line and Chirp will tell you why it can import the lines that it didn't but it might if you manually
try to copy and past the lines that didn't import, one by one.
That way you can make the changes yourself. I've been through it cloning 3 different brands and currently have all 3 cloned 99% identical. Some settings can't be cloned because they don't exist in a certain brand radio while they do in another.
