I use these memory settings for my FT-857D, menu options almost identical to FT-897. On CHIRP tab "Memories" look to the right for tab "Special Channels." If you touch this you will see many special channels that you can program for VFO A and B including HOME frequencies. After uploading to rig, once you change mode to a band it will default to the programmed frequency but only right after uploading. Once you access a frequency it will go back to that frequency next time you move to that band on that VFO. Home frequencies will not change unless you purposely change via rig procedure.
I have noticed sometimes the band up/band down buttons on my rig will sometimes skip bands. When that happens I can go the other direction and the band is there. Unpredictable when or what bands might be skipped. Does on VFO A or B.
Normal memories in CHIRP will set frequency, mode, step, etc. reliably. I have had no problems with CHIRP and my rig.

Downloading the memory from the FT-897 reveals a number of fields that appear to determine the VFO frequency and operating mode for each band when the band switch is used. That is, the band switch cycles through this list of memories to determine the frequency, mode, and frequency step in HF and that plus the tone and offset in VHF and UHF. There are also memories for the HOME frequencies.
Can CHIRP be used to set these memories, reliably? Does anyone know if the band switch will behave erratically if these fields are changed?
