Got to the UV5 “Menu” and use arrow to go to menu 22 “MDF-B.”  Hit the “menu” button again and arrow to “NAME.”  Hit mane to confirm and “EXIT.”  Now you have FREQuency display on “A” with a name of its channel on.  Just did it on mine…kind of nice.  Just remember whatever is displayed on A channel is probably different than what is selected on B.  (Unless same channels are selected.)

I'm new to the UV-5R and CHIRP and am having a problem that I hope is an easy fix. I was able to download from the radio and everything seems fine. I added names to the previously saved channels and added a ton of channels from the included files. When ?I uploaded the configuration to the radio, the channel names do not display. When ?I download the new configuration from the radio, the channel names were not present.?

So it's definitely not sending the channel names to the radio. I have channel A set to display names and I have tried with B set to names or frequency but it doesn't change the outcome.?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.?

Thank you?

While most/all radios can't store data like this, I think this would be

a very useful feature for us humans!  I imagine this would only be

stored locally in chirp and IGNORED when doing uploads into radios.

Downloads from radios wouldn't have any of this data as they couldn't

store it in the first place .  Maybe another "comment" file could store

this detail and then merged and displayed when a new download comes in

from the radio.  Maybe this would be similar to RT-Systems's "name" or

"comment" fields:

Just use Chirp CSV files. They do this.

If CHIRP is uploading the additional channels, it is uploading the

names. Did you happen to set the Memory Display Format using the

keypad. It would seem to me CHIRP is not set to the same values and is

therefor changing the values (as it should).

Look at these CHIRP settings...

I've tried setting it using the keypad as well as changing it in CHIRP. Does it need to be the same in both (radio and software) before I start??

Also, if it's uploading the names, why do the names not come back into CHIRP on a subsequent download from the radio??

One more question, I have the 97 firmware on the radio so would it possibly not load / display any names if some are 7 characters? CHIRP supports 7 but as I understand it the newer firmware only allows 6.

Thanks.

No. But how it is set in CHIRP is how it will be in the radio after a

successful upload.

It is apparently not updating. Make a fresh download from your radio.

Attach both it and the file you are attempting to upload or email them

directly to me.

What do you mean by "97" firmware. Do you mean BFB297 firmware? It

isn't a good idea to abbreviate when asking for help. What you are

asking for and what others think you are asking for many not be the

same.

One thing is for sure, unless your radio is something like 4 years

old, it does not have BFB297 firmware. Ever since the release of

BFB299 firmware back in 2013 or so, all UV05R variants display BFB297

in the [3] key + power on message making this message useless for

determining the firmware version.

If the radio only supported 6 characters it would show 6 of the 7 characters.
