The device selected is '/dev/cu.usbserial'
When I have the kawamall device plugged in this is the one shows up in the list, if I unplug the device this one is no longer available.

Can you tell me exactly which device is selected?
About one second goes by then I get error on radio and error reported in chirp.
The rest of the procedure sounds correct (thanks for the detail). It really sounds like the wrong device is being opened and CHIRP reads nothing (and fails) and the radio gets no ACK (and fails).
Can you send me the debug.log after reproducing the fail just so I can see if there's anything else there?
I have neither a Mac nor an FT-8800, although I do know that the 8800 driver is actively used and my 7800 (which is the same driver) seems to be fine.
What kind of cable is this? It's not a recent RTSystems cable is it?
