I was referring to the file that you can save with all the information for each channel. I have both my UV-5R's loaded the same. But I could not make the file, load it to one, then switch radios, and load it to the other. I had to download the info from the new radio, before I could get it to load the new channel file to the radio.

...across versions of the UV-5R, correct. That's because they decided to change their memory layout for the later versions of the firmware.
When you go to the other version, you need to download from the radio, the open the file with all your saved info, and upload it to the new radio. In other words, download from the radio, even if you do not intend to use the file, that seems to be what tells chirp what version radio you have.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, but CHIRP doesn't store any information about what radios (or versions) you have.
