Well no there's no menu at the top but the Alt+d worked. I got the box to set the port, vendor and model and the the instructions to connect the radio but then I get thie error...
SerialException: [Errno 13] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/dev/ttyUSB0'
Is the menu at the very top of the screen when you move your mouse pointer up there? That's the default configuration for Ubuntu IIRC.
Even if the menu is really missing, the shortcut keys might work eg. Alt+D for Download, Alt+U for Upload.
I do think when Chirp is started with no command line parameters, it should open with a window giving buttons like "Download from radio" and "Open file". Perhaps a bit like Brasero.

Yes,that is what I get but when chirp opens its only an empty "window" with a plain white background, no other text or menus or anything....Is something else causing that?
