Except for the "rest of the world" which has standardised on 12.5KHz channel spacing. As usual, the US will catch up eventually.

You are incorrect. Ham bands are wide band, 25 hz width compared to 12.5 wide narrow band for public safety/business use. We are not talking audio width, but frequency band width.
