Hi Dennis There is only two reasons you can only hear the repeater conversations when you push the monitor button on your radio.
1. You don’t have the correct decode tone programmed into your radio. Or 2. The repeater is not transmitting a ctcss tone. Best thing for you to do for the moment is to set your radio tone decode to “none” and then check with the repeater techs to see if, in-fact, they have tone encode enabled on this repeater. They may have either disabled it, or it’s different from the info you have received about this repeater. End of story.

Perhaps there are other and perhaps closer repeaters on the same frequency but using a different tone?
I think someone also suggested removing the tone from the decode side which should be the same as holding in the monitor button

Here's what it was: 98 H AL 1 145.23 - 0.6 TSQL 186.2 186.2 23 NN NFM 5
This is what I changed it to: 98 H AL 1 145.23 - 0.6 Tone 186.2 186.2 23 NN NFM 5
Waiting for some chatter.

So CTCSS is a more generic term for Tone and TSQL.
Still doesn't answer why I had to hit MONI to hear a repeater conversation.

TSQL usually means a tone must be sent from the repeater or other party so you can hear THEIR signal. You never NEED to use TSQL. The only time it comes in handy is if you are getting some kind of RFI or interference from another repeater. Turn TSQL off and you will probably be able to hear the repeater properly. I have no where else to ask this question.
Is TSQL the same as CTCSS?
The reason I am so intrigued is about this is
The other day my UV-5R was in scan mode and a repeater in Huntsville continually stopped my scan with a carrier or tone, not sure which yet. But I heard no audio. No matter where I set the squelch, even to 0 I got no audio. However, if I hit the Moni button I could hear the guys talking.
What was happening here?
Thanks in advance.
In 3 weeks I'll be W9BOQ if the FCC grants my vanity call sign.
