There can be problems when Apple's FTDI driver conflicts with FTDI's FTDI driver. Here is a good guide that explains uninstalling one of the two so they don't conflict: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-to-install-ftdi-drivers/mac

OK, I was even more stumped!! Building and etc... I tried a couple of Chirp versions... The UV8D & UV8D plus are DIFFERENT radios. Took a bit of searching, but there is programming software on the Wouxom site! http://wouxun.com/download.aspx?flid=1093
