The USB cables should appear as serial ports. If you cannot see'em as serial ports on the Mac, you cannot get past square 0. (I've found it useful to jumper the TX and RX pins on the cable's radio plug and try to send typed characters through the USB cable as a serial port using a terminal emulator; you should see the typed characters echoed on the console. How to properly jumper the TX and RX will depend on the circuitry in your particular cable, but this is discoverable from a 'Net search.)
