'Cut and Paste' is used to move data from one location to another, usually in the same document, and makes permanent changes to the source material.

'Copy and Paste' is much more commonly used when duplicating data from one location to another, and has no effect on the source material.

I cut and paste between open images (.img files) quite often. I'm just
careful when I do not to save the file I cut from or at least give it
the ole Ctrl-Z before I close it.  Oddly enough...copy and paste has the
same effect.
