Per the official documentation at http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux , the easiest approach would be to install the PPA but it seems Dan is only building for x86-based CPUs (not ARM) today.

Launchpad only builds intel packages by default. I've asked for arm builds to be enabled for the PPA, but it's out of my hands:
