James,
I might be joining this discussion late, and couldn't immediately see to which message in the digest you included which message you might be responding to. But...
I use CHIRP for my UV-5RE+ radios.
I notice that when the radio 'breaks squelch' on receive during a 'cloning' transfer (either up or down), that the serial transfer is usually aborted. I account this as a Baofeng problems, not a CHIRP one.
I use a FTDI USB-to-Serial cable (from 3 Old Crows) without problems. I quickly gave up on the (probably counterfet) Prolific-branded cable that came with the radio kit I purchased.
Have you looked at http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/ and in particular at http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-ErrorMess.php to see if your (or a similar) problem is discussed?
What, exactly, is not working for you?
