Hmm. My automatic don't-worry-your-little-head default was port 6. In fact, the correct one was #10 on my Dell running XP. Checking the port number is always high in my "Oh, crap" checklist. Indeed, my driver software was installed several years ago; I do not know which it is.
Again, I'm new with CHIRP, so I beg your patience !!

Hi Dave, I don't believe there will be a need to be concerned with the port number if the prolific 2303 driver is downloaded and installed. when I did that it immediately recognized the circuitry in the patch cord.

How about your serial port ?  I just jumped in, so forgive me if I'm redundant.
If you do not know which port is being used, unplug your USB-to-radio cable at the computer end. Re-plug it and watch for a small notice specifying the port to which the computer connected it. Verify that CHIRP is looking at the correct port.
I just went through this, within the past half hour. Good luck. I'm a newbie, here, too.
