I am using a Yaesu FT-60R and a Yaesu FT-857D.

My CT-57A cable works OK under M/S Windows with both CHIRP and RT Software.

Windows Vista Device Manager shows my cable as "CT-57A Radio Cable"
My cable is produced by RT Systems,
which calls it the "USB-57A Programming Cable"
        www.rtsystemsinc.com/USB-cable-for-FT-60-s/2035.htm

Both Windows XP & Windows Vista Device Managers show it as "CT-57A Radio Cable"

The Driver File Detail shows:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ftser2k.sys
C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\serenum.sys
C:\Windows\system32\ftserui2.dll

HOWEVER:

The cable is not seen by CHIRP booted from the Live CD burnt from
the download on 2012-12-27

Nor is it seen by Kubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron, kernel 2.6.24-19).

Yes, I know - Hardy is somewhat archaic, but it does all I need [except that I
cannot do 'sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-hams-updates/ppa' <grin>].

Doing a 'sudo lsusb -v' yields, among other stuff, this relevant info:

CHIRP, on the Live CD, when attempting to Download Radio, shows the following:
        An error has occurred
could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0: [Errno 2]
        No such file or directory:'/dev/ttyUSB0'

I tried everything else I could think of, even ttyS0 thru ttyS31
There are no ttyUSBx devices or files listed under /dev,
there are only usbmon0, usbmon1, & usbmon2.

I'm stumped.

Other than trying a different cable, any ideas ? ? ?
