The related TM-D7A also has a funky thing you can use under Linux http://www.qsl.net/ve7yjh/The 'D700 also supports realtime control. If you have any communications issues, try a program that's supposed to give you realtime control - a hamlib based tool like flrig or this funky satellite programEither should be able to talk to the radio. If they do (at least to the point of reading what freq you're on) you should be good to go on the hardware side.

With the help and guidance of Mike Rees, I changed the Com Port to COM1 and Chirp is now working fine. It is actually easy to change the COM port number in Windows. Plus I learned of Kenwood's software MCP700 (Memory Control Program) which handles various settings that Chirp does not address in the D700.Thanks very much Mike for your time!Best regards and 73,

This might be a clue to a possible diagnostic test. Is it possible to configure your USB cable to use a lower serial port number, say something less than 4? And then give it a try? Good luck. I am no expert; just repeating superstitious chants and rituals. 73.

Tom,
What com port did you use? I keep hearing a rumor that Kenwood doesn’t like com port numbers above 4.

Rich...I just downloaded to CHIRP from my D700A. I connect my radio directly to a serial port at the back of my computer and when I start the download I set the model number to detect rather than D700.

Thank you for relying Mike!
What does it take to get the D-700 to cooperate? I have a new USB-63
cable from RT Systems, downloaded the driver first (and successfully), but I
cannot download any data from the DM-700. Com port is 8. When downloading
from radio, when I click 'OK', nothing happens at all.
I don't know if this is a clue, but the second time I try to download, I
get an error message "could not open port COM8: [Error 5] Access is denied."
It's not like I am inexperienced, I have programmed 2 HT's my Kenwood TM V71-A
dual band mobile successfully in the past on this computer. Hoping to transfer those
channels over through Chirp.
Any ideas of things to try?
Thanks again,

Rich,
I have. You connect to the RS-232 port. You might need a gender changer if using a straight serial cable. If dealing with USB get a Kenwood specific cable with a FTDI chipset. The cable that RT Systems sells with there software works perfect all the time.

2) What cable did you use?
3) Does that cable connect to the 9-pin RS-232 on the radio, or the 6-pin mini DIN connector?
Thank you,
