The learning curve for manual prog was fairly short since it's so similar to the HT. But it's quite tedious compared to using Chirp. May just have to wait a while for a later ver. of chirp.

Are you sure you have a working programming cable? We aren't aware of any issues of downloading from the BTECH radios with CHIRP when using Windows. I have none here with my various preproduction, gen1, gen2 and gen3 radios. So there isn't likely to be any changes to future builds that would help you.
Load CHIRP, attempt a download, close CHIRP and grab the debug.log file and attach it here (or email it to me) so we can see what is/isn't happening. The "How to report issues" page on the CHIRP website will show you how to find the debug.log file.
