I tried to check CHIRP log in terminal but couldn’t get it to work.
Maybe my cable is no good? Its a Maxton RPC-Y7R-U so is based on a Prolific chip from what I can figure out.

Try the CHIRP Live CD. If that doesn't work, then the problem is most likely the programming cable or its connection to the radio. If it does work, then you know the cable is good and it must be something to do with the computer (most likely the driver).
