Thanks for the info. You are correct that something is intermittent. I followed the steps here: https://www.buytwowayradios.com/blog/2013/11/how_to_install_the_baofeng_usb_programming_cable_and_software_1.html

and managed to get the download from the UV-5R working once. But after disconnecting, rebooting and trying again, I am no longer able to download from the radio getting
[Errno 16] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0:
[Errno 16] Device or resource busy: '/dev/ttyUSB0'

The output of

and

$ groups

I don't have access to anybody else's cable, I'm in Singapore right and I don't know any ham's around here. I'm thinking to buy another cable, but with this corona virus thing, it may take a long time for merchandise to arrive from China.

This setup, (the radios and cable) I bought many years ago and I was able to get it working back then on a different computer. But then I put it into storage until this COVID-2019 thing flared up recently causing people to panic-buying and I felt I should get my radios out of the closet and make sure everything is working properly again. Maybe after sitting in storage so long, the cable has deteriorated....

The problem with Prolific chip sets only affects Windows users.

Something's intermittent.

Can you borrow someone's USB cable?

Send us the output of the command:

users

It should include dialout in that line as /dev/ttyUSB0 belongs to users in that group.

that I need to use an old version of the USB driver to work with the Prolific chip set that I have in my cable. That web page gives details on what to do for Windows, but I couldn't find anything for Ubuntu.

Does anyone know how to make sure I am using the correct driver for Ubuntu 16.04, and how to get the correct driver if it isn't?

Thanks

Kheong.

Thanks for reply.

I've pushed the cable in at full-strength (into the UV-5R). When I got those results.

I'm trying to connect to a UV-5R using a USB cable that was bought some time (maybe 5-10 years) ago, using chirpw on ubuntu 16.04.

The tty port is found when I plug it in:
$ dmesg | grep tty
[ 7527.188154] usb 1-2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[ 7548.490452] pl2303 ttyUSB0: pl2303 converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0

$ la /dev/ttyU*
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Feb 17 13:49 /dev/ttyUSB0

When I start chirpw and try to download from radio, the error is not consistent, it depends on whether I've tried it before or not. Sometimes I get the error:
[Errno 16] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0:
[Errno 16] Device or resource busy: '/dev/ttyUSB0'

and /dev/ttyUSB0 disappears.

Another time after I unplugged and replugged the USB cable and restarted chirpw, /dev/ttyUSB0 reappears and when I try to download from radio I get:
[Errno 5] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0:
[Errno 5] Input/output error: '/dev/ttyUSB0'

Any advice on how to troubleshoot this?

Kheong.
