Check whether modules (drivers) are loaded with the command /lsmod/
Is your computer recognizing the cable/? /Check by removing the cable from your computer, put it back and take a look at /dmesg | tail -20/ - hopefully you'll see something like:

BTW, I had problems getting Linux Mint running CHIRP to recognize my Wouxon KG-6UV but it was automatically recognized by my Arch Linux laptop, I gave up and just use CHIRP on my laptop.
