Yes you need a ground reference connection. Join the Data TX and RX together onto the data pin and it works.
I made my own cable for the VX-5 and it works.

It seems like VX-7R uses one pin for data and it is bidirectional. If that is the case then you should add some more components to convert bidirectional single pin to standard RX/TX serial connection.
