What about the radio model isn't in the software?

Because the programming cable is manufactured with a USB-to-Serial
chip that, when used with a compatible device driver, creates a
virtual COM port. This is necessary because virtually all radios
programmed by CHIRP use serial communications and it is rare to see a
modern computer with a legacy serial port.
