Removing the antenna is bad advice. Most failure modes with the
programming cable result in the radio transmitting. For example...
- connecting the USB programming cable to a powered on radio prior to
the driver being fully loaded.
- connecting the USB programming cable to a powered on radio with an
incompatible driver loaded.
- powering OFF the computer with USB programming cable connected to
the computer and to a powered on radio.
- unplugging the USB programming cable from the computer while still
connected to a powered on radio.
So do not remove the antenna without replacing it with a dummy load.
A solution that doesn't require removal of the antenna would be to
tune to a VFO frequency or select MR channel that has no signals
present. Adding a receive DCS code or receive CTCSS tone may also be
worthwhile. If you create a channel just for this purpose, you could
call it "PROG" or something similar and select it before powering OFF
the radio to attach the programming cable.
