thanks to all for advice re: programming my baofeng uv-5r+. Special thanks to Jim Unroe-i downloaded the older driver you recommended and also found that my two prong connection was not fully installed. That plus some VERY detailed and helpful directions for using CHIRP supplied by Rich AG6QR from a local ham club have me up and running.

thanks again!

Try running Chirp as administrator.  Also, check the device manager and see if the software driver is registered under PORTS(COM & LPT).  When you run Chirp it has to be set to match what is in the PORTS device manager settings.

The #1 cause is an incompatible device driver is installed for the
chip in the programming cable. Which chip is in your programming cable
(check Device Manager)? If it is detected as a Prolific type chip, you
must download, install and select the older, but compatible, Prolific
v3.2.0.0 device driver.

http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php

The #2 cause is a poor connection between the 2-pin plug of the
programming cable and the socket of the radio. Some users have had to
press on the plug during the cloning process.
