A few things about making your own cable because I have made one myself in the past. The radio doesn't use a serial hook up, it needs TTL. If you have a serial port in front of you you can create a small Circuit to convert it to TTL. Just google serial to TTL and it will show you. The next thing you were mentioning about keying up and transmitting. From what I recall you have to keep the grounds separate from the input and output.Good luck on your endeavors.
JoeSent from my iPhoneI do commend you for the go at it on your own. That is the real HAM spirit.Glenn----- Original Message -----From: Dan GrantSent: Tuesday, March 07, 2017 7:43 PMSubject: Re: [chirp_users] Baofeng UV-5RThanks very much for the assistance!

Or you could go all in and order a proper cable from Amazon for around 10 bucks

I just got on Ebay and ordered a CP-2102 chip ($3) and refitted my cables to that. Cheaper.

Subject: [chirp_users] Baofeng UV-5R
I’m VERY new at this so hope this question isn’t off base! I have a new Baofeng UV-5R and have made my own cable to connect to it. The cable I’ve made is a DB9F to 3.5mm and 2.5mm plugs. The USB to serial adapter that I connect to is one that I’ve used with other things and works fine.
With the connectors in the radio the display comes up with a solid black dot matrix in the top frequency display and most of the info icons across the top. When I try to read the radio with CHIRP, I can see some data communication on the lights of the USB/Serial interface and the radio display changes to almost normal but then goes in to transmit mode and everything stops. I get an error indicating that “An error has occurred - Radio did not respond”.
I’m hoping someone can suggest some things to look at to further troubleshoot this!
Thanks
Dan Grant
