I tired VFO mode with a freshly charged battery right out of the charger.  The  UV-5RA brought up the repeater for 5 or ten seconds and then died. It sounds like it is the battery or the radio, not the interface to CHIRP. sigh.

This doesn't sound like a CHIRP issue. What happens when you try to
transmit on the same frequency in the VFO?
