The OS definitely needs a driver to talk to the cable, that's not optional. However, most of the time macOS has the proper drivers already. But, your post really doesn't have enough information for us to even know whether or not it sees the cable, much less if it sees the radio. It would be much better if you could use these instructions first:

Doing that will tell us a lot, including whether or not a driver for your cable is required. If you do, then the mac users on this list will be able to help you find and install one.
