But Chirp is only a set of Python scripts written in plain text. Plain text is only 8 bit so why would the OS matter? It's only the Python runtime that needs to be 64 bit.

To be clear, that question was rhetorical. If/when OSX no longer supports 32-bit executables, then it will need a 64-bit Python runtime, and a 64-bit CHIRP -- and the KK7DS Python runtime will also need to be updated accordingly.
