Thanks for all the replies, folks. No I have a better handle on the radio. Bought it to try alternate firmware options but thought I ought to learn the radio first. :) All of your responses helped me.

The only difference here is that Virtual Serial Port emulation (VSP) is carried out within the radio itself, rather than within a programming cable. CHIRP sees the emulated serial port of the H3 just like any other serial device it is presented with.
