I was told that .chirp is not really supported anymore and that I should use CSV. Make sure you are using the latest nightly build just in case you're running into a bug that has been fixed.

that seems to work. but it appeared not to when i first tried. is the radio name important. if so how is it changed?
CSV format is radio agnostic, so the radio name doesn't matter.
I don't have Excel, so I'm not sure what it is doing to your CSV files. Probably changing the comma format or maybe you removed/changed the column labels or entered a value that Chirp didn't understand (e.g. "100.0 Hz" instead of "100.0"). You can try opening the Excel CSV and Chirp CSV both in Notepad and comparing them to see what changed.
The recommended way to manage your memories is to save a master CSV file with all your channels in the stock_configs folder. Every time you want to program a radio, copy/paste or import from this master CSV. If you need to add a new repeater to the CSV, in Chirp select File > Open stock config and choose your master CSV. Use Chirp to type in the new repeater information (or import from a data source like Repeater Book) then save the CSV.
