FRS are virtually useless. Go for GMRS and buy a license.
Under the new 2017 rules, FRS is no longer limited to .5 watts and the number of channels has been expanede. The old FRS/GMRS bubble pack radios that put out 2 watts or less ERP are now FRS only and do not require a license to use any available channel. The old FRS/GMRS bubble pack radios that put out more than 2 watts are now GMRS only and do require a license (even the 7 channels that used to be FRS only).
