RadioError: Failed to communicate with the radio: Attempting to use a port that is not open
seems that it is having trouble opening the serial port? Did you logout completely and back in after adding yourself to dialout group. Does "id" command show that you are member of dialout group? What are permissions on /dev/ttyUSB0 (ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0) ?
regarding mac, and chinese cables, not working is very common problem. "fixed" drivers must be used: see the note about driver for fake prolific chipset here: http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MacOS_Tips

I have added my user name to the dialout group.
I don't use the MacBook (OS X) because I've found getting the drivers to work on my WIndows machine was just too hard. With Linux, it's a dream. Plus I like to play with different OS's so I have both Xubuntu and Windows 7 VMs running under VirtualBox on my MacBook. For as rarely as I use CHIRP (2-3 times per year) easy is better. :-)

This is important to me since I often program radios of others when we officiate bicycle races. Being able to add frequencies to their existing list is essential.
FWIW, a similar cable worked just fine on my Baofengs.
