Mac users hate to hear this, but the next step is to try it on a different OS. Either use a live CD as was suggested here and try it in Linux, or find a friend with a Windows or Linux machine and give it a go there. That's your quickest path to pointing at checking the radio and cable and pointing at a driver issue.
