No, that's not necessary.
At the bottom of every list message are links for managing your subscription.
One of them is this:

edit options". Next, you have to enter your list password, which you
probably forgot, so you can click on "Remind". Don't use a
super-secret password here because the login is insecure.
Once you have your password you can log in. Then you can see your
subscription options. Change them as required then log out.
Alternatively, as described here

can send an email to the list server. You still need your list
password:
Send a message to:
chirp_users-request@intrepid.danplanet.com
With the content:
set authenticate <password>
set digest off
to turn it off or
set authenticate <password>
set digest plain
or
set digest mime
to turn it on.
I just tried it and it works.
