Every time I have used Chirp, any issues were from my learning curve.
That's on me, not anything from the program that could be done better. I
challenge you to find a better program, with better support at any cost.
You will get further in life, if you learn to channel your emotions to
solving problems, and not blaming the rest of the world.
Cheers. George

I can also confirm that the IC-80AD doesn't show up in the Chirp: Radio
--> "Download from Radio" list (using the 07/30/17 Linux daily). I just
tried the auto-detect option but when I tell Chirp to download from the
radio (correct serial port, FTDI based cable that's worked on in the
past, etc), I'm only getting the following regardless if the radio is
sitting in clone mode, I try to initiate clone from the radio then tell
Chirp to start, etc.

ERROR: --- Exception Dialog: Out of sync with radio ---

I would assume that once I tell Chirp to start downloading, it would sit
there for a while, waiting for me to hit the PTT button on the radio to
start sending it's data. What seems to be happening is that Chirp is
not waiting and almost instantly errors out. This used to work though
I'll admit it's been some time since I've programed this radio.

As a newbie, I can tell you all I am very thankful for all of the work that has been done here.
I just programmed my first radio about 6 or 8 months and all the problems that I've had
was my learning curve. Had it working the 4th or 5th time I went back thru everything.
Besides, it's free, these people done this just to help others, If you don't like it maybe
you just need to uninstall it, leave everyone here alone and stop being such an asshole.

Hi Mike,
Apparently you either aren't using CHIRP or aren't using the CHIRP I
am familiar with. When I started using CHIRP back in 2012 it supported
Windows serial ports COM1 through COM16. More than most any other
factory software that I has experience with at the time. Not long
after that CHIRP was updated and Windows version now has support for
COM1 through COM256.
But CHIRP will only show you the COM ports that are currently
available on your computer. It is your job to have a configured and
properly working COM port on your computer.

Mike,
I personally replied to your first message.
There were also three additional replies.
To your second message there were 17 replies.
People have tried to help you, I personally am using COM 5 so what you are
saying is not true.
I also asked you if you were using a USB to Serial converter, and you did
not answer me.
It's obvious, but perhaps you need someone to tell you: What you are
saying is totally false.
I'm saying that because people who start believing what is false, really
become confused and it's a frightening trip that sometimes is one from
which they never return to sanity.
I hope you find your way. We're here to help about CHIRP but there are
other places you can seek aid for the other problems which seem obvious at
least to me.
Best wishes,
David N1EA

Hello Mike,
Thanks for the off-list direct reply (copied below). Others including
myself are trying to help you but we don't get responses from you to help
fix the problem that you are having. A screen print of your Device Manager
showing the COM ports that are being recognized would help. You can upload
such a screen shot anonymously to http://imgur.com. Just post the link
they will give you.
As you have just been told, your COM port is not being seen.
Can you see your comport under Device Manager?
What you wrote to me doesn't even make sense.
i am going to spent my time with software that will not works
>
CHIRP works fine. It supports the COM port that you have.
You haven't answered any question that has been asked of you, but you
complain.
If you want to answer some questions we can find what the problem is that
you are having.
Thousands of people use this software every day.
A few have problems, but usually it is just an operator error.
If you would like to write to the list calmly, we could help you find the
error you have.
Often it is a cable that is defective. Some cables do not fit in the
radios.
Often - with Windows - the user has purchased a cable with a counterfeit
electronic chip in it they are based on the Prolific PL-2303 USB chip.
Windows detects the chip and updates the driver, and the driver now updated
won't work with the fake chip in the USB to serial port converter.
There are suitable converters - they are based on the FTDI chip.
Here is a USB to Serial Port converter that is FTDI based.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004ZMYTYC/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_ nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid= 37GZ3VAPMP84W&coliid= I3NO9S4ALAH06C&psc=1
You've asked for help, people have responded to you, but you fail to
respond to questions.
Can you show us a screen shot of the Port being recognized by Device Manger?
If it's recognized by Device Manager, it WILL be seen in CHIRP.
Wishing you well,
David N1EA

I use it all the time, works great.... Never had an issue or a question
not answered within a reasonable amount of time.
In fact just finished reprogramming two radios today....

Mike,
Let's start helping you.
Tell us:
1. What operating system and version you are using. CHIRP works on all
platforms. I'm using Linux but it works on Mac and Windows as well.
2. Tell us what radio you are trying to program? If it's more then one,
pick one so we can get that working first, the others will follow.
3. Tell us what kind of cable you are using. There are some problems
with counterfeit cables - it's not a CHIRP problem but there are Chinese
made adapters that use fake chips using the Prolific chip. The FTDI chip
based cables work fine. See http://chirp.danplanet.com
/projects/chirp/wiki/CableGuide
<http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/CableGuide > There is
also a work-around for the automatic driver update that Windows does that
will allow your counterfeit cable to work by rolling back the driver.
Let's start there and see if we can add you to the happy CHIRP user base.
Best wishes,
David N1EA

The FTDI USB/RS-232 chips have also been counterfeited, tho' seemingly
not in such great numbers.
Remember when FTDI released a driver that detected the fake parts and
bricked 'em? After (I suspect a severe scolding for) using MS to
distribute the driver, they released a follow-up that, like Prolific's,
merely declines to work with counterfeit parts. (Least that's my
recollection.)

Aww, but it can be fun and entertaining to feed trolls!!
No, seriously though, I agree that CHIRP is a great bit of software that I
am so very thankful for. Have managed to programme 2 of my radios with it
(wish it would support the 3rd rig, but alas not yet.)
My sincere thanks to the team for their work and dedication.

Does anyone have a very good relationship with the management of POWERWERX.COM?
I have tried to speak to them about CHIRP but they are under some prejudice that CHIRP bricks radios so that they are unrecoverable.
If someone knows the owner, I'd like to lobby for acceptance of this fine software with the object that they could persuade some companies to share programming data with the developers of CHIRP.

I love Chirp and have used it on at least three different radios. My
greatest problem is finding a cable that really works. Some of the USB to
serial cables are defective clones and have cost me a bundle trying to
either find or build a good one. Never had an issue with Chirp. Thank you
for the software.

There are two ways to go with this:
- Buy one good FTDI to DE9 cable and then buy only serial cables for each radio
- Or switch to Linux where there are no driver issues

No, and Chirp does not even have a generic mechanism to handle
talkgroups and trunked sites, so it's not likely to be added any time
soon.

The cheap cable are not a real problem as long as you use the older driver.
Works fine for me

Y'know, I have heard more than 1 ham claim that chirp is "dangerous" and/or
junk, but when pressed, they all either heard it from someone else or they
expect the same sort of experience you get when you pay for an integrated
solution, like RT Systems. Chirp works. You have to pay attention to the
details like proper cable selection, but it works. It's not an out- of- the
box solution. It's more in the spirit of ham radio.

I have never taken the time to thank the people who make CHIRP possible,
maintain it, answer my questions, etc. and this seemed like a good time
to say that you are appreciated, that you have blessed me, you have been
patient with my ignorance, you have given me a product that I couldn't
have afforded otherwise, and you have made possible for me something I
couldn't have done on my own. Thank you very much. You are wonderful!

There are two ways to go with this:
- Buy one good FTDI to DE9 cable and then buy only serial cables for each radio
- Or switch to Linux where there are no driver issues
