What kind of connectors does the microphone use?

Or are there other connectors on it that look like the ones on the cable for the UV5R? I bet if there is a matching place to plug the cable, it will work as it does on the handy.

Sounds like you don't have a driver loaded for the cable that gives you
a serial device. Usually /dev/cu.*.
